About the role:
We are looking for a Field Officer to join our Kirikiriroa based team. You will report to a Lead Organiser and your role includes:
Travelling around the region visiting your assigned worksites and/ or member groups (usually three days a week)
Planning for regular contact, visibility and development for your assigned worksites and/ or member groups
Implementing campaign and sector strategies to achieve union goals in your region
Identifying, development and coaching of member leaders.
Skills and experience:
Strong relational skills to build worksite, group and member leader relationships
Experience working in union or social-impact organisations
A current full driver’s licence
An interest in publicly funded education, commitment to Te Tiriti, unionism and social justice
Demonstrated ability to work flexibly to achieve teamwork, as well as work independently across a large region.
What do NZEI Te Riu Roa Field Officers do each day?
The team is based in the Hamilton office on Mondays and Fridays to plan out the week’s mahi and to review progress with the Lead Organiser. On other days, field officers are out and about working with member leaders, attending hui with member groups and encouraging people to connect with our current campaigns.
This role involves a lot of relationship building and one-to-one conversations that build confidence with members and member leaders to advocate for themselves. You need to be a strong listener, one who can sit in conversations, finding the common ground for workers to work together for change in their profession.
Our field officers are not leading the charge for change – they are growing and developing union members who want to improve their working conditions.

NZEI Te Riu Roa is a Te Tiriti based organising and campaigning union of members who work together locally and nationally to achieve the best possible education system for tamariki and the people who work in it. Together we take a strategic approach to achieving members’ aims, including the protection and promotion of the industrial and professional interests of members.
