New teacher offer out with union members to accept or reject

06 Sept 2025

NZEI Te Riu Roa sent a new Government offer to teachers yesterday, which they are voting on over the weekend and through till Monday night.

Paeone Goonan, a resource teacher of learning and behaviour and primary teacher negotiation team lead, says that NZEI Te Riu Roa sent the offer out swiftly on Friday afternoon as members are keen for swift and efficient bargaining.

“We’ve asked members to indicate whether they want to accept the offer and go back to the table to finalise it or reject the offer and move to a vote on strike action."

Ms Goonan says that members are being asked to consider if the offer fairly values their work, supports them and their students’ needs, and acknowledges the role of Te Tiriti in the education system.

“We will go back into bargaining next week with a clear mandate either way from our members.”

Notes to editors:

The new offer includes improved pay rates by still falls short of current CPI of 2.7%, and in no way comes close to addressing the pay equity claim scrapped by the Government in May.

The new offer is:

  • Teachers on steps 1-8 of the pay scale get flat rate increases of $1,300 this year and $1,200 in the new year, working out at increases of between 2.7% and 4.1% over two years.
  • Teachers on step 9 and 10 of the pay scale receive a 2.5% pay increase this year and 2.1% next year.
