Primary teachers vow to continue fight against rushed curriculum changes

04 Pae 2026

Primary teacher members of NZEI Te Riu Roa vow to continue their opposition to the Government’s rushed and poorly designed curriculum changes.

“Ratifying the Public Service Commission’s offer does not mean we’re accepting an unsustainable workload that threatens both student outcomes and teacher wellbeing,” NZEI Te Riu Roa Primary teacher leader and bargaining team co-lead Liam Rutherford said.

“Our bargaining team has presented evidence from thousands of teachers demonstrating the immense pressure these changes place on us,” Mr Rutherford said.

“Despite this, we feel that the Government refused to acknowledge the reality in our classrooms,” he added.

“We stand united. We will continue to act collectively to ensure our ākonga are protected.

“At the same time, the momentum of our campaign for learning support – specifically, a teacher aide in every classroom – continues to build. We will keep the pressure on decision-makers to increase funding as we approach the May Budget and the general election in November,” Mr Rutherford said.
